Sep. 7, 2004 – Chicago rapper Twista, known for hits such as “Slow Jamz” and “So Sexy,” was hurt in a van crash that killed a member of his security staff, state police said.

Twista, whose real name is Carl Mitchell, was treated and released from a hospital in Erie after the van in which he was riding veered off Interstate 90 just after 4 a.m. Monday and rolled over in the median, police said.

Another man in the van, Arthur Dixon of Chicago, died after he was taken to a hospital, authorities said. Five other men in the van were hurt, none seriously, police and hospital officials said.

The van was headed from Syracuse, N.Y., to Chicago when the crash happened, said Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook.

Police were investigating how the van veered off the road in a construction zone and into the median, where it rolled over.

A decision on whether to file charges won’t be made until at least Wednesday, said county District Attorney Brad Foulk, who declined to say what caused the accident.

“It’s a miracle that any of them survived because all of them, except for the driver, were ejected onto the medial strip,” Foulk said.

The driver, identified by police as Otis Bankhead of Chicago, was the only person in the vehicle wearing a seat belt, Foulk said.

Mitchell, 30, was originally known as Tung Twista and was listed in Guinness World Records in 1992 as the fastest rapper in the world. His “So Sexy” was eighth on Billboard’s latest list of hot rap tracks; “Slow Jamz” went to No. 1 on the Billboard chart earlier this year, and the album “Kamikaze” sold more than a million copies.

Twista had been scheduled to appear in Albany, N.Y., on Monday, but the show was canceled so another rapper on the bill, LL Cool J, could be with his wife after surgery, according to the Web site for Albany’s Pepsi Arena.

Seven years ago, a vain and jaded baseball star (Bernie Mac) retired from the sport as soon as achieving his 3,000th base hit, and his place within the select group who have achieved that distinction. Now, however, after three of those hits during his time with the Milwaukee Brewers have been disqualified, the Hall of Famer returns to the game, playing once again for the Brewers, to play a few more games and get back to the 3,000 mark, but along the way, he discovers that the experience renews his love for the sport, reminding him what it was like to be a young boy obsessed with the game, as he finds himself imparting some of this knowledge to a young rookie he mentors.

The Cookout

When Todd Anderson (Storm P) is chosen as the #1 professional basketbal draft pick and signs to play for his home team, the New Jersey Nets, for $30 million, he finds that his newfound wealth means his relationships with the people in his life is bound to change. This becomes evident when he decides to throw the sort of family/neighborhood cookout his family has always had during the summer at his new house in a stuffy white neighborhood, which means that there’s going to be more than one type of culture clash, between his new and old friends, and those who like him for him, and those who like him for his money. The event is timed to coincide with Todd’s first endorsement deal announcement, which only accentuates the difference between his roots and his newfound fame. Watching over the proceedings is the neighborhood association’s security guard (Queen Latifah), who’s there to make none of their rules get broken… although that is certainly guaranteed with Todd’s rowdy family and friends in attendance.

The criminal case against Kobe Bryant case collapsed Wednesday as prosecutors dropped the sexual assault charge against him, saying they had no choice because the NBA star’s accuser no longer wanted to participate.

Bryant, whose trial had been days from opening arguments, responded with an apology to the woman who had accused him and whose civil suit for damages is still pending.

“Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual, I recognize now that she did not and does not view this incident the same way I did,” Bryant said. “I now understand how she feels that she did not consent to this encounter.”

The woman’s attorney, John Clune, said she has been through an extremely difficult time since she alleged she was raped, and that she was disturbed by a series of courthouse mistakes that included release of her name and medical history. She has been the subject of death threats and relentless media coverage in the high-profile case.

“It is in her sincere belief that when this case ends, she does not want to be brought back into the criminal process,” Clune said.

“The difficulties that this case has imposed on this woman the past year are unimaginable.”

The dismissal marks a dramatic but not entirely unexpected turn in the high-profile case against one the NBA’s brightest young stars. For months, prosecutors had insisted they had a strong enough case to win a conviction beyond a reasonable doubt, but legal experts said their case was greatly weakened when Bryant’s attorneys convinced the judge to allow some evidence about his accuser’s sexual history.

I come back from the damn MTV haps in Miami to another hurricane about to smash up my home state. I ran into an old freak from years ago. When I say old – I mean OLD! This bitch was 35 when I was 17. She was always asking me to come over to cut her grass n shit. I went a few times and she asked if I wanted the $30 or something else as payment. I always took the money. If she smelled anything like the inside of her house I would have passed out from the stinch before I could do anything. Anyways, I saw her at Walgreens with some cat that had to be 15. Mind you this ho has got to be 45+. She yelled out “Heyyyyyy!” – I gave her the black man’s whats up (the head nod). She was like “Oooo I aint seen you since you was a baby, you all grown up now and looking gooooood.” Im like “Yea, thanks”

She broke the line and started walking towards me (She left buddy in line looking like a herb)

I told her I was in a rush, but it was nice seeing her. She asked me what I was doing later. I told her I had to hit a few clubs before I got too tired. So she handed a business card with her contact info (all professional n shit) except for her being naked on the picture. I laughed and asked what kind of business she was in. She was like “I run a high class dating service.” From the looks of her, she has been really busy lately. Sista looked “Crack-ish”. I cut her convo short cuz it seemed like she learned how to whisper in a helicopter. Too bad I dont run a base head site. She could be the mascot for it – Fo Sho!

Dancehall star Beenie Man, who has recorded anti-gay songs in the past, was yanked from a concert associated with the MTV Video Music Awards this weekend after gay groups planned a protest, the network said Wednesday.

MTV pulled the Jamaican singer from the roster Tuesday after South Florida gay activists announced plans to protest Saturday’s concert in Miami over some of his past lyrics, including “I’m dreaming of a new Jamaica, come to execute all the gays” and “Queers must be killed.”

Marion Jones

A foot short with the baton. Eight inches short in the sand.

Hoping to win a pair of gold medals Friday, Marion Jones was shut out instead. After finishing fifth in the long jump, a botched relay handoff ended her chances of winning even a single medal in Athens — a disastrous finish to her tumultuous summer.

“It was an extremely disappointing performance for me. It exceeded my wildest dreams in a negative sense,” Jones said. “I looked for great things this year. It didn’t happen for me and it didn’t happen for the team this year.”

Jones was trying to do in a few hours what few elite athletes can achieve in a lifetime — win two Olympic medals, one on the track and one on the field.

With the fastest time in the world this year, the U.S. 400-meter relay team had taken gold for granted and was aiming for a world record. But they could only watch as Jamaica won in 41.73 seconds. Russia won the silver medal in 42.27, and France got the bronze in 42.54.

Jones, running the second leg an hour after her final long jump, was close to the lead as she approached Lauryn Williams, the 100-meter silver medalist. But Williams started running her leg too soon. Jones reached once, then shouted “Wait up! Wait up!” as she reached a second time.

Williams was left grasping at air while Jones reached desperately for her younger teammate.

The Americans won’t be the Olympic basketball champions for the first time since 1988, beaten by an Argentine team that lacks stars but simply knows how to play together better.

Manu Ginobili scored 29 points to lead Argentina to an 89-81 victory in the semifinals Friday night, humbling the nation where the game was invented and perfected.

Bronze is now the best the Americans can do with their hastily assembled assortment of NBA stars that showed weaknesses almost from the moment it began practicing in late July, a month after its opponents.

Indeed, the Dream Team days are long gone. It’s the first time since pro players were added for the 1992 Olympics that the United States will not go home with gold.

“We fought as hard as we could,” Allen Iverson said. “We couldn’t get it done for whatever reason. They were a better team than us.”

I spent the last few days down in Miami looking for a new office location to shoot our new material. It was slow going, but we will work it out. We have some exciting new projects around the corner. I wanted to get the bikini contest rolling, but we didnt have enough complete entries to launch it. I got a lot of females who filled out the forms, but didnt submit their photos. We will work that out.

I have all of the plots/storylines for our new 4 movies already written and ready to go so I will be really out in the streets recruiting in the next couple weeks. Once I secure the new office we will move the props/furniture and start shooting immediately.

If you are ready to get down. Let me know and I will be in touch. I will not be flying anyone in right now, but still get at me so I will have your info on file.

Peace,

Quarterback Quincy Carter signed with the New York Jets on Tuesday, three weeks after his surprising release by Dallas.

Carter, who started every game for the Cowboys last season, was released Aug. 4, before the team’s first exhibition game. Reports said he failed a drug test and the NFL Players Association has filed a request for arbitration in the case.

Gene Upshaw, the union’s executive director, told The Associated Press that the NFLPA will continue to press the case. “We have to,” he said, adding that part of the grievance involves potential salary loss to Carter.

With the Jets, Carter will back up Chad Pennington, giving the team an experienced second-stringer. Neither of the other two quarterbacks, second-year man Brooks Bollinger nor Ricky Ray, who played in the Canadian Football League, has ever taken an NFL snap.

Ironically, Carter; successor is 40-year-old Vinny Testaverde, who was released this spring by the Jets after starting 57 games in six seasons.

Carter, a second-round draft choice by the Cowboys in 2001, started all 31 games in which he played for Dallas, including 17 last season — 16 in the regular season and one in the playoffs. In his career, he has 507 completions in 902 attempts for 5,839 yards with 29 touchdowns and 36 interceptions.

Known for his mobility, he has run 140 times for 498 yards.
